On June 1, more than 500 people from across Chicagoland came together at Western Springs Baptist Church to obey a vital yet often overlooked command of Scripture: to worship God in spirit and in truth.

Led by Roy Patterson, with support from Hannah Thompson, Joann Montes, David Gauger, and Mark Wright, the evening was filled with joyful praise, heartfelt singing, and deep encouragement. With perfect acoustics filling the sanctuary, voices united in beloved hymns like Blessed Assurance, Marvelous Grace of Jesus, Love Lifted Me, and Amazing Grace. The Western Springs Choir offered a moving arrangement of Fairest Lord Jesus that stirred the hearts of all present.

Roy shared a short devotional and lifted up a prayer for those facing life’s trials, as the crowd stood in reverent agreement. A highlight of the evening came during the “What’s Your Favorite Hymn?” segment, where one attendee stumped the team with Wonderful Grace of Jesus. Roy turned to the congregation for help — and was met with a beautiful, impromptu four-part harmony that filled the room with awe.

When asked whether the HymnSing should happen again, the response was overwhelming: “YES!”

Stay tuned — Roy Pattern is planning to do HymnSing against this fall. You won’t want to miss it.
