On Juneteenth, June 19, Together Chicago joined with Justice Journey Alliance, Leadership Foundation of Chicago, and community members for a 2.5-mile Commemorative Walk on Chicago’s South Side. The walk, organized by Rev. Alvin C. Bibbs, Sr. President & CEO of the Justice Journey Alliance, Leadership Foundation of Chicago—who also serves as Together Chicago’s Community & Faith Engagement Officer and leader of the Gospel Justice focus area—drew over 100 participants who gathered at 31st Street Beach.
This year’s walk was more than a physical journey; it was a public act of remembrance and reflection on the long road from enslavement to freedom for African Americans. As the nation celebrated Juneteenth—the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom—this gathering brought together faith leaders, civic partners, and local residents in a united call for justice, racial healing, and community solidarity.
Together Chicago is proud to stand with Justice Journey Alliance, Leadership Foundation of Chicago, and all who continue to walk toward a more just and equitable Chicago.
