On March 7 and April 11, people from faith, civic, nonprofit, and violence prevention sectors across the city gathered for our annual Building Blocks of Peace trainings, first at New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church on the South side, and most recently at River City Community Church on the West Side. These sessions follow the Chicagoland United in Prayer gathering in February, where we came together to pray for our city; while prayer is powerful, what happens next matters just as much.

At the Building Blocks of Peace trainings, we learned how to faithfully engage our neighbors, organize for collective action, practice peacemaking, and participate in civic life. Each session brings together local speakers, leaders, and servant-hearted neighbors who share how they are working for peace and wellbeing right where they live. We learn from their experiences, discuss practical ways to show up faithfully on our own blocks, and then end each session with a prayer walk through the neighborhood.

The phrase “Building Blocks of Peace” carries two meanings: First, it points to the things—ideas, practices, and actions—that help communities flourish. Second, it reminds us of the places—the actual blocks and spaces—where peace is built: our homes, churches, parks, and schools. Faithful presence means seeking the wellbeing of our neighborhoods through consistent, positive involvement close to where we live and serve. Everyone has a role to play in building peace together.

As we look ahead, we invite you to take part in Hands Across Chicago over Memorial Day weekend. This citywide event calls people to engage in faithful presence through prayer or community action in specific locations across the city. You can host a gathering on your block or join one already in motion. Register or learn more at handsacrosschicago.com
