Two of Together Chicago’s Victim Services Advocates, Cleatrice Martin and Victoria Burgess, recently completed an intensive victim services advocate program to further strengthening their skills in supporting gun violence survivors.
The four-month program, organized by the Mayor’s office and hosted at Malcom X College, brought together a cohort of approximately 18 participants, including advocates from other community organizations and police officers. Meeting twice a a week for four hours at a time, the program focused on the real, day-to-day work of victim advocacy. Participants deepened their understanding of domestic violence and sexual assault, learned how to be effective and compassionate listeners, explored best practices for self-care, and build knowledge of resources to share with victims. The program also emphasized collaboration, equipping advocates to work more effectively across organizations and systems.
We are grateful for Cleatrice and Victoria’s commitment to continued learning and growth, and we congratulate them on this achievement and look forward to the impact of their expanded skills in our community.
